Meet Montene Speight
BESLS Vice President of Events!
With an expected graduation date of December 2019, Montene has concentrated her studies on Labor and Employment Law.
Previously, Montene worked as a Legal Intern at Borstein Turkel, a Law Clerk at Cohen, Weiss, and Simon, and a Legal Intern in the Southern District of New York. In February 2019, she joined the Management Council Department at the National Football League, and today, she continues her work with the NFL in the Compliance Department.
Montene joined BESLS as a 1L with the goal of networking with future colleagues and building genuine relationships, and since then, Montene has been a valuable and dedicated member of the Society as her contributions to the organization are innumerable. Before serving as the current BESLS Vice President of Events, Montene served as the BESLS Secretary in 2018-2019 and as a 1L Sports delegate in 2017-2018.
Montene’s favorite BESLS event was a Q&A in 2017 with Harrison Gaines, an NBA Sports Agent known for representing the Ball Brothers. At this event Gaines spoke about his transition from athlete to agent and founding his sports agency, SLASH Sports & Entertainment.
Montene’s advice to 1L’s is to be creative in how you network with people! She suggests reaching out to people, sending coffee and lunch invites, and making sure to follow up. She advises law students to not just rely on Symplicity, Indeed, or other job boards, but instead, to get creative in networking and branding themselves.
A fun fact about Montene is that she is a former professional track and field athlete. As a dual citizen of the United States and Great Britain, Montene spent a year competing in Europe training to represent Great Britain in the 2016 Olympics.
Montene’s passion for sports comes from her being an athlete herself, and today, her career goal remains becoming a top sports lawyer.
She is well on her way!
